Customizing your color palette

Set primary, accent, and background colors for your menus.

Color slots

Every template in MenuSquared uses three color slots that define your menu's palette:

  • Primary: The dominant color, used for headings, section titles, and decorative accents. This is typically your brand's main color.
  • Accent: A secondary color used for highlights, badges, price text, and interactive elements. It should complement your primary color.
  • Background: The base color of your menu page. Most menus use white or a light neutral, but dark backgrounds work beautifully with the right template.

Curated themes

Each template comes with a set of curated color themes, professionally designed palettes that work well with that template's typography and layout.

To browse curated themes, open the Branding tab in the editor (paintbrush icon) and look for the color palette section. Click any theme swatch to apply it instantly. The live preview updates in real time.

Tip: Start with a curated theme

Curated themes are designed by professionals and tested with each template. Even if you plan to customize later, starting with a curated theme gives you a strong foundation.

Custom colors

If the curated themes don't match your brand, you can set custom colors for each slot:

  1. Open advanced color settings: In the Branding tab, toggle the advanced view to reveal individual color pickers for each slot.
  2. Pick your colors: Use the color picker or enter a hex code directly (e.g., #D2691E).
  3. Preview in real time: The menu preview updates immediately so you can see exactly how your colors look.

Where colors apply

Colors can be set at two levels:

  • Restaurant defaults (Design System): Set in Settings → Design System. These become the default palette for all new menus you create.
  • Menu-level overrides: Set in the editor's Branding tab for the specific menu you're editing. These override the restaurant defaults for that menu only.

This is part of the branding cascade: template defaults sit at the bottom, restaurant settings in the middle, and menu overrides at the top. The highest level always wins.

Tips & frequently asked questions

Will my colors look the same in print?

Screen colors (RGB) and print colors (CMYK) can differ slightly. Bright, saturated colors on screen may appear slightly muted when printed. Enable the CMYK color option in the PDF export tab for the closest print match.

Can I reset to the template's default colors?

Yes. Switch to the "Use restaurant defaults" option in the Branding scope panel, or select a curated theme to reset to a known palette.

Why don't some templates let me change the background color?

A few templates have backgrounds that are integral to their design (e.g., dark-themed templates like After Dark or Lunar Noir). In these cases, the background color is locked but the primary and accent colors remain customizable.
