Adding and organizing sections
Create sections, rename them, and reorder with drag & drop.
Creating a section
Sections are the main organizational blocks of your menu: "Appetizers", "Mains", "Desserts", "Cocktails", and so on. Every menu item belongs to a section.
- Click "Add Section" at the bottom of the left sidebar in the editor.
- Name your section: A new section appears with an editable title. Type the name (e.g., "Starters") and press Enter or click away to confirm.
- Start adding items: Click the chevron to expand the section, then click + Add to create your first item.
Renaming and editing
Click directly on a section's title in the left sidebar to edit it inline. Press Enter or click away to save.
For more options, click the three-dot menu on the right side of the section header. This gives you access to:
- Duplicate: Creates an exact copy of the section (including all items) below the original.
- Display modes: Switch between layout modes like Featured, Alternate, Compact, or Showcase (see below).
- Delete: Permanently removes the section and all its items. You'll be asked to confirm first.
Reordering sections
Drag sections up or down using the grip handle on the left side of each section header. The order in the sidebar matches the order on your printed or shared menu.
As you drag, you'll see a visual preview of where the section will land. Release to drop it into place. Changes are saved automatically.
Tip: Menu flow matters
Most menus follow a natural dining order: starters, then mains, then sides, then desserts, then drinks. If you're unsure, the Sous Chef AI can suggest improvements to your section order.
Display modes
Each section can be set to a display mode that changes how it's rendered on your menu. Available modes depend on your template:
- Default: Standard item list. Clean and straightforward.
- Featured: A highlighted section with extra prominence. Only one section per menu can be featured. Enables metadata fields like subtitle, footnote, and badge label.
- Alternate: An alternative styling for visual variety. The exact look depends on your template.
- Compact: A tighter, more condensed layout. Great for long lists of simple items like sides or drinks.
- Showcase: A photo-focused layout where each item displays its photo prominently. Requires a template that supports item photos.
To change a section's display mode, open its three-dot menu and select the mode you want. If a mode isn't supported by your current template, it will appear disabled with an explanation.
Section metadata
When a section is set to Featured mode, additional fields become available:
- Subtitle: A short flavor text below the section title (e.g., "Slow-simmered, hand-pounded pastes").
- Footnote: A note at the bottom of the section, often used for disclaimers or caveats (e.g., "Prices may vary by season").
- Badge label: A small tag that appears in the section header (e.g., "Market Price Daily", "New").
- Legend: A guide for symbols or pricing keys used in the section (e.g., "V = Vegetarian, GF = Gluten Free").
These fields are optional. Leave any of them blank if you don't need them.
Tips & frequently asked questions
Is there a limit on how many sections I can have?
No. You can add as many sections as you need. Keep in mind that very long menus may span multiple pages when exported as PDF.
Can I have more than one featured section?
No. Only one section per menu can be set to Featured mode. If you mark a new section as Featured, the previous one will revert to Default.
Why is a display mode grayed out?
Not all templates support every display mode. If a mode is grayed out, it means your current template doesn't include styling for that layout. Try switching to a template that supports it, or use one of the available modes.
